Trauma / PTSD

Trauma is an emotional response to an event such as an accident, sexual assault or childhood family events. Long term reactions of experiencing traumatic events include unpredictable emotions, flashbacks, difficult relationships and physical symptoms including nausea and, in some cases, has visual / auditory hallucinations.

SIGNS OF PTSD :

  • A life threatening event. Whether it actually is life threatening or not, it’s really about the perception of the person who experienced or witnessed the event that might happen to them again.
  • Flashbacks of traumatic events. Signs of these injuries often appear as a nightmare or flashbacks. It’s important to note that these are not memories but are unwanted, intrusive episodes where a person feels as though they are in the life-threatening situation again.
  • Avoidance of repetitive external situation. Those with PTSD often do whatever they can to not think about their traumatic event, to suppress the feelings associated with it. They might avoid alleys if they were assaulted in one, or they might refuse to drive if they were in a car accident.
  • Altered anxiety state. PTSD can leave people feeling anxious and hypervigilant. Their response state is exaggerated making them feel jumpy. This is a physical sign of PTSD and reaction to increased anxiety and possible threats.
  • Changes in mood or thinking. People with PTSD often see the world as a very dangerous place and felt the need to protect themselves from it making it difficult to socialize or go out in public. Isolation can lead to depression and increases the probability of engaging in risky behaviors.

EMDR

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a psychotherapy that heals people from trauma from traumatic life experiences. People can quickly get benefit. Once it took years to make a difference in talk therapy. The Hills Rehab offers this specialized therapy and would be happy to provide an assessment to further discuss how this can help you.

It has been speculated that severe traumatic pain requires a long time to heal. EMDR therapy has shown that the mind can heal from trauma as quickly as the body recovers from the physical trauma. When you cut your legs, your body will work quickly to heal the wound. If anything irritates the wound It can cause inflammation and pain. When the scars fade the body continues to heal. As with EMDR therapy, it has been shown that a similar sequence of events occurs with mental processes. If the system is out of balance from the effects of a traumatic event Emotional wounds fester and cause suffering. and when the wound is erased, treatment will continue.

Our EMDRIA-certified EMDR therapists at The Hills Rehab are highly qualified to integrate the benefits of standard EMDR protocols by conceptualizing Internal Family Systems (IFS).

The EMDR+IFS PARTS protocol overlays the Internal Family Systems (IFS) model into the protocol. Standard EMDR, which could help using ways for a more authoritative approach to wound healing.

Advantages of the EMDR PARTS protocol:

  • Developing the understanding
  • Sympathy finding and understanding of thinking, feeling and behaviors
  • Internal regaining trust
  • Stronger identity development
  • Strengthen wound healing flexibility
  • Deal with “Faith Blocking” by more compassionate

Brainspotting

Brainspotting (BSP) and healing through Brainspotting is different from other psychotherapies and healing modalities in a variety of ways. It strategically utilises the client’s visual field to access their brain’s self-scanning and self-healing properties. Brainspotting emphasises the importance of present awareness, completely integrating the therapist’s relational and neurobiological attunement to the client in the enhanced therapeutic relationship to process issues and parts that are looking to heal.

In the context of Brainspotting therapy, a “Brainspot” refers to a specific eye position that is targeted during the therapeutic process. Brainspots are identified based on subtle eye movements, known as “oculomotor reflexes,” which indicate areas of heightened brain activity related to unresolved trauma or emotional distress.

By focusing on these Brainspots, individuals can access and process deep-seated emotions, memories, and sensations associated with their traumatic experiences. Brainspotting leverages the brain’s natural healing abilities by engaging specific neural pathways through visual stimulation.

Brainspotting is rooted in the understanding of the brain-body connection and utilizes the visual field to engage the limbic system and facilitate neurobiological healing. Brainspotting is a nonverbal therapy approach that can complement and enhance traditional talk therapy, offering a powerful tool for trauma processing, personal growth, and emotional well-being.

As a powerful therapeutic technique, Brainspotting enables individuals to address unresolved emotional material and promote healing and emotional resolution.

What Issues Can Brainspotting Treat?

Brainspotting can be effective in treating a wide range of psychological and emotional issues. While individual experiences may vary, Brainspotting has shown promise in addressing the following concerns:

Trauma: Brainspotting is particularly well-suited for trauma processing and healing. It can help individuals process and release the emotional impact of various types of trauma, such as childhood abuse, accidents, natural disasters, or combat-related experiences.

Anxiety and Phobias: Brainspotting can assist in alleviating anxiety disorders, including generalized anxiety disorder, social anxiety, panic disorder, and specific phobias. It helps individuals identify and process the underlying fears and triggers contributing to their anxiety.

Depression: Brainspotting can be beneficial for individuals experiencing depression by facilitating the release of underlying emotional pain and promoting a sense of emotional resilience and empowerment.

Addiction and Substance Abuse: Brainspotting can complement addiction treatment by addressing the underlying emotional issues and trauma that may contribute to addictive behaviours. It aids in resolving cravings, reducing triggers, and supporting relapse prevention.

Performance Anxiety: Brainspotting can help individuals overcome performance anxiety in various domains, such as sports, public speaking, artistic performances, or academic pursuits. It assists in accessing and processing the underlying fears and self-limiting beliefs that hinder performance.

ADD/ADHD: Brainspotting works deep into the subcortex which interfaces with the central nervous system.  Through this access point, the client can work into the deeper causes that influence their impulsivity, inattention or hyperactivity.  Brainspotting appreciates, but seeks to work beyond, oversimplified diagnostic terms to meet the person’s individual presentation which is always as unique as a fingerprint.

Grief and Loss: Brainspotting can support individuals in navigating the grieving process and healing from the emotional pain associated with loss. It allows for the release of suppressed emotions and facilitates the integration of the loss into one’s life.
